EARTHQUAKE PRECAUTIONS DISCUSSED IN KUŞADASI
Following a significant increase in the number of earthquakes in the Aegean Sea in recent days, Kuşadası District Governorate held a meeting attended by Kuşadası Mayor Ömer Günel, administrative chiefs and chamber presidents working in the city. At the meeting, Aydın Provincial Disaster and Emergency Department (AFAD) Provincial Director Yalçın Mumcu gave information to the participants about the effects of a possible major earthquake in the region on Kuşadası and the precautions to be taken.
As a result of the seismic activity in the Aegean Sea since January 28, the number of earthquakes in the region has exceeded 750. As the earthquakes, which concentrated approximately 25 kilometres northeast of Greece's Santorini Island, were also felt in Kuşadası, a meeting was held with the District Disaster and Emergency Coordination Board at Efe Ayşe KYK Girls' Dormitory by Kuşadası District Governorate. Kuşadası Mayor Ömer Günel, ADÜ Tourism Faculty Dean Prof. Dr. Nuri Özdoğan, Kuşadası Chamber of Commerce President (KUTO) Serdar Akdoğan, KESO President Ahmet Çalım, Egeport Port Operations General Manager Aziz Güngör, Aydın AFAD Provincial Director Yalçın Mumcu and administrative chiefs working in the district attended the meeting held in the Conference Hall under the chairmanship of District Governor İbrahim Keklik.
Speaking at the opening of the meeting, Kuşadası District Governor İbrahim Keklik stated that there was a lot of information pollution about the earthquakes which were occurring in the Aegean Sea and said;
“In our meeting today, clear information about the latest situation will be given to us by Aydın AFAD Provincial Director Yalçın Mumcu. This way, we will reach the most accurate information. We will also talk about the measures that need to be taken in our district.,".
“SIMILAR SEISMIC ACTIVITY WAS ALSO EXPERIENCED BEFORE”
Speaking after District Governor İbrahim Keklik, Aydın AFAD Provincial Director Yalçın Mumcu stated that there was currently an earthquake storm in the region where Santorini Island is located. Reminding that a similar intensity of seismic activity was observed in the same region between 2011 and 2012, Yalçın Mumcu said;
“Earthquake Storm is a process that can last for days, weeks, and sometimes months, and in which medium and low intensity earthquakes frequently occur. It usually manifests itself with earthquakes with magnitudes ranging from 5 to 5.5. This is one of the characteristic features of the Aegean Region. "The closest earthquake to our country's coast in that region occurred 140 kilometres away,"
"THE MEASURES TAKEN MUST BE KEPT ALIVE AT ALL TIMES"
Mumcu stating that if the Hellenic Arc, which starts from the Ionian Sea in the southwest of Greece and passes through the south of Crete Island and connects to the Fethiye Burdur fault, breaks, the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts may be affected by the earthquake added;
"What is important here is the measures taken and will be taken. For this reason, the district disaster response plan in Kuşadası should always be kept alive at all times. The location of the meeting areas should be posted on the doors of all public buildings. Communication is also of great importance during a disaster. All institutions in districts and cities need to work in a coordinated and harmonious manner, both between AFAD and each other,"
“MEETING AREAS CAN BE REACHED FROM ADA MOBILE APPLICATION”
Kuşadası Mayor Ömer Günel said;
“The meeting was very beneficial for Kuşadası in every respect. We talked about the effects of a possible earthquake in the Aegean Sea on Kuşadası and the precautions taken and to be taken. By reviewing our work on the geological map and earthquake regulations of our city, we will be prepared together for all possible situations. All my fellow citizens can access emergency meeting areas in our city through our Ada Mobile application and the official website of Kuşadası Municipality,"
