“HE HAS ALWAYS BEEN A FLAG CARRIER”

During the interview, journalist and writer Osman İkiz told the audience short sections from his book and how Maffy stepped into the world of jazz. Stating that Maffy comes from a family of musicians, İkiz said, "The name Maffy starts with being called "mafili" in the family. His name changed to "mafi" to cover his night studies during his conservatory education. In Europe, his name is "Maffy" and he is always referred to by this name. However, the name "Maffy" does not prevent him from being referred to as the Turkish trumpet gem. The record, released in the USA in 1962 with the title "Jazz Is Universal", had a Turkish flag on its cover. Stage announcements were made as Maffy Falay Türkei. He named the jazz orchestra he founded in Sweden "Sevda". He came to the fore with his jazz adaptations of syncopated Turkish folk music. "As an artist, he has always been a flag bearer," he said.

“HE NEVER CARED ABOUT MATERIALS AND FAMOUS”

Pointing out that Ahmet Muvaffak Falay was not interested in any other genre other than bebop jazz throughout his career, Osman İkiz said, “Maffy did not care about materiality or fame during his lifetime. The only thing that mattered to him was bebop and jazz. He did not recognize any other type of music. For this reason, we can call him the dervish of jazz music. It had a very important place in the life of American jazz musician Charlie Parker. "A museum can be established in Kuşadası, where he started his musical life, consisting of the items he used to keep his memories alive," he said.

The commemoration program continued with the Kuşadası Municipal Band performing a concert in front of Maffy's statue on Barbaros Hayrettin Paşa Boulevard. At the event, which attracted great interest from Kuşadası residents, Turkish jazz trumpet player Tolga Bilgin also gave a short concert of Maffy's works.
