Kuşadası Mayor Ömer Günel reacted to the harsh intervention of the gendarmerie in the protest initiated by local people and environmentalists against the deforestation that occurred due to the mining area planned to be opened in Akbelen Forest in Muğla's Milas district. Mayor Ömer Günel said, "The new mission of the state, whose duty should be to protect our nature and future, is to attack its citizens who want to protect their nature and future with batons and pepper gas," and underlined that this situation is neither legal nor humane.

While the resistance of local people and environmentalists continued against the tree massacre that took place approximately 4 years ago by Yeniköy Kemerköy Energy (YK), a joint subsidiary of Limak Holding and IC Holding, to expand the mining area known as Akbelen Forest, the intervention of the gendarmerie with pepper gas and batons and the detention of some people It caused a huge reaction.
